Schedule: 11:00am-12:15pm: Workshop: Food Justice and the Labor Movement While food workers are some of the most exploited workers in the global economy, they are also leading some of the most creative and effective organizing campaigns to improve their conditions and encourage a truly fair food economy. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers is one of the leading examples of innovative organizing campaigns, but they are also part of a broader movement for workplace justice in the food chain. Their struggles - and those of their brothers and sisters in the fields & factories and in restaurants & supermarkets - remind us that a truly sustainable food system can only be achieved when the people harvesting, packaging, preparing, and serving our food are treated with both dignity and respect. Come and learn about some of their dynamic efforts and find out how you, too, can help bring us all one step closer to real sustainability. Presented by Leonard Morin and Maria Corona from Brandworkers, Audrey Sasson from the Community/Farmworker Alliance, Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York, and the United Food and Commercial Workers The Commons, 388 Atlantic Avenue between Bond and Hoyt Street, Brooklyn NY 12:30PM: Sample Justice Action at Brooklyn Trader Joe's We will distribute “Traitor Joe’s” sample cups with pennies inside, encouraging local customers to bring their sample cup and a note inside to the manager; and demand that Trader Joe’s do the right thing and pay one penny more. 130 Court Street between State Street and Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn NY 1:00-2:15PM: Trader Joe’s, Green Washing, and a Guise of “Sustainability” Trader Joe’s, like many other large corporations on the 21st century, claims to be a “sustainable” company that prides itself for its integrity and values, but in actuality, they are refusing to do the right thing and sign a Fair Food Agreement with farmworkers. In this workshop, we will present on the relationship that consumers have to the supermarket industry, "green washing” and profiting off of "sustainability”. Presented by Charlene Obernauer of Long Island Jobs with Justice and the Community/Farmworker Alliance. The Commons, 388 Atlantic Avenue between Bond and Hoyt Street, Brooklyn NY 2:30PM: Unity Run for Farmworker Justice Starting from the Commons, we will be running to Trader Joe's to let our presence, sweat, and energy demand that Trader Joe's needs to come to the table! Join us for a short race, while we chant, run in unity, and deliver a manager letter. Together we will run for farmworker justice! 130 Court Street between State Street and Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn NY 3:00PM: CIW Presentation/Amp-Up The Coalition of Immokalee Workers will present on the numerous victorious campaigns that they have waged which have led to fair food agreements with many of the largest fast food corporations in the world. We will practice chants and songs while learning from one of the most inspirational worker-led movements in the country. This workshop will help you join the Campaign for Fair Food and be part of the campaign against Trader Joe's that too will be victorious! Children will hand out “Pay One Penny More” balloons to customers, urging customers to bring the balloons inside with them and to participate in our National Action at 4pm. 130 Court Street between State Street and Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn NY 4:00PM CIW National Action Allies from all over New York and all across the Northeast will protest in front of Trader Joe’s with colorful protest art and inspiring music. 130 Court Street between State Street and Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn NY *Throughout the day, there will be various short and feature length films shown about farmworker organizing and experiences as well as food justice.
